Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), the government authority charged with regulating, coordinating and supervising all aspects of the maritime sector in Dubai, will organize a forum titled "Maritime Places of Refuge" that serves as one of the networking activities during the first-ever Dubai Maritime Week 2012 at the Dubai Customs headquarters. The full-day forum, which will include a series of discussions and presentations by key personalities in the maritime sector, will be held on November 26.

DMCA is organising the forum to highlight the lessons learned from various high-profile maritime disasters globally and create a unified and more effective approach in dealing with such incidents. With the shipping industry carrying 90 per cent of world trade, including over 50,000 ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz annually, DMCA had underlined the urgency to organize the Maritime Places of Refuge and Salvage Forum as well as similar initiatives to enhance maritime safety, security and environmental compliance.

Khalid Meftah, Director of Maritime Corporate Development at Dubai Maritime City Authority said: "It was very important to initiate a dialogue among maritime stakeholders to develop a holistic approach in preventing and managing maritime disasters. The Dubai Maritime Week, which will gather representatives from all major maritime companies and government entities, therefore serves as an ideal platform to organize the forum on Maritime Salvage. Widely experienced maritime professionals who have had first-hand experience in dealing with various maritime disasters will serve as speakers of the forum, providing key insights and practical advice to all participants. This initiative is in line with the continuing efforts of Dubai Maritime City Authority to promote the sustainable growth and development of the maritime industry."

The topics that will be discussed at the forum include provisions for place of refuge and casualty preparation, port disaster recovery, maximizing response efforts, and risk mitigation strategy. The forum will also include a brief on marine events of the last 10 years and a discussion on the Places of Refuge concept from a salvor's perspective.

Organized in collaboration with several strategic partners from Dubai Government, Dubai Maritime Week 2012 will host a range of maritime industry-related activities and events, including conferences, panel discussions and forums, as well as public-oriented activities to celebrate Dubai's maritime heritage.
The Dubai Maritime Week 2012 is organized through close cooperation between DMCA and Seatrade, one of the leading publishing houses and maritime-related event organizers in the world. The event will feature the 'Seatrade Middle East & Indian Subcontinent Awards', 'Seatrade Middle East Maritime Exhibition & Conference' and 'Seatrade Middle East Money & Ships Conference'.
