Statistics show that very few people are currently backing up their data on their computers, but a new website is showing users the importance of protecting their files and how to do so.

A new website who's mission is to educate people about backing up their computer data has just launched. Every year, due to viruses and hardware crashes, millions of users around the world lose their valuable computer files.
Yet, many users still continue to not routinely backup their files. Windows 8 for instance completely revamped the backup system, because fewer than 5% of PCs used backup and restore.
BackupSoftwareReview.org was recently launched to educate users about the benefits and necessities of regularly backing up their files. It also demonstrates the different ways that this can be one, from online backups to external devices.
Even back in 1998, data loss cost businesses in the U.S. an estimated $11.8 billion in damages. For the last 4 years, Backblaze has conducted an annual June Backup Awareness Month, running a yearly survey that asks the simple question of "are you backing up your data?". The conclusion has been that only 6% of PC users regularly backup their files.
From here, only 7% in 2011 did so daily, and the major figure was 27% backing up data monthly. 31% of users have lost all of their information on their computers in regards to circumstances in which they had no control over.
But perhaps the most critical is how data loss effects companies. It's been estimated that 60% of companies that lose all of their data will go out of business within 6 months from the event.
According to Computer Economics, in 1999, businesses operating in the U.S. collectively lost more than $7.6 billion dollars due to viruses during the first half of the year.
But that was then and this is now. Considering that cyber crime has grown dramatically, the demand for protection and routinely backing up files should be at the forefront of people's minds. In 1990, there were just 1,300 instances of malware, compared to more than 200 million in 2010.
The message is pretty clear after looking over such facts. If you value your information and have sensitive data sitting on your PC, protect it by backing it up.
Numerous ways can be employed to do so, with many of them being affordable. There are free backup utilities, which may not sport the same features as paid for online PC backups, but are better than nothing.
There are also external devices that can be used. CD-Rs for smaller files, such as financial documents, USB flash drives for larger storage needs, RAIDs, NAS for connectivity of multiple computers within a household and of course online storage server systems such as Carbonite and Mozy.
