(prHWY.com) September 20, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- The idea behind a warehouse management software program is simple. People input what is coming and going to the warehouse and the software program tracks it on a screen. That was what one small warehouse in Idaho thought until the software program started showing some unknown item.
"I was going through the daily sheets of items that were coming and going into the warehouse", said John Miller, supervisor for inventory at the local warehouse. "I noticed that there was one item that seemed to be unaccounted for. It didn't show it coming or going, it was just there in the warehouse."
John Miller went back through the
warehouse records and couldn't seem to find where the item came from. There appeared to be no record of this mysterious item in any of the records.
"I couldn't seem to find any indication of where this item came from or what it was", said Miller. "That got me really curious. Most of our records are complete. Everything has some sort of paper trail. This item didn't at all."
With his curiosity peaked, John Miller decided to spend his lunch break searching for the item. The warehouse management software gave John a general direction to look for the item, but didn't tell him the exact spot.
"It took almost two weeks of constant searching to find this item", explained Miller. "I could only look on my breaks. I even tried recruiting the help of some of my co-workers. We eventually found the item."
The item was eventually retrieved by the team and what they found surprised them. It appears as if the item was an ancient painting by one of Europe's greatest painters.
"It appears as if this warehouse was used for painting storage a while back", explained Miller. "The painting we found was part of a collection and it just got lost somehow."
John Miller took the newly discovered painting to an appraiser. The painting was discovered to cost approximately $1.5 million. The painting was part of a long lost collection and one that many historians believed to be lost.
"It's amazing", said Joan Clay, appraiser of the painting. "Hundreds of people have been looking for this item for years. And the funny thing is it was sitting right there in a warehouse all this time."
The painting will be given back to its original owners. Once they have possession of it they will take it on a world tour where it will be displayed at some of the world's most renowned art museums.
