The 2012 Frederick Film Festival Daily Events: Live Music, Gatherings, Feature Films and Short Films
The 2012 Frederick Film Festival (F3), now in its 4th year, is announcing the daily events involving premiere films, film professionals, and special film events happening in Frederick on June 22-24 during the festival.
(prHWY.com) June 17, 2012 - Frederick, MD -- The lineup includes not only screenings of acclaimed feature films and short films, but also opportunities to meet filmmakers, attend gatherings with them, listen to great music, and enjoy great refreshments.
Opening Night - Friday, June 22
This year's Opening Night starts on Friday at 7pm at the Weinberg Center for the Arts with a happy hour/meet and greet with the guests for the evening. Happy hour includes discounted drink prices at the Weinberg and light refreshments. The film events begin with a selection of short films: "Time Freak", "Dimanche", and "Wild Life." All three of these short films were nominated for Oscars earlier this year.
The short films will be followed by the film "Record Paradise: The Musical Life of Joe Lee" directed by Michael Streissguth. The film tells the story of Joe Lee, the son of a former governor, the black sheep of a blue-blood Maryland family, owner of one of the nation's most successful record stores, and an irreverent musical impresario. Leading an unruly parade of musicians, collectors, and disc jockeys, Joe has sold records to generations and produced, booked and managed some of Washington D.C.'s most beloved blues and rock acts, including the tragically zany Root Boy Slim. Joe Lee and Michael Streissguth will be on hand for the evening and will take questions following the screening.
Finally, the evening caps off with the Brewer's Alley F3 Afterparty. Your festival pass gets you into the upstairs party at Brewer's Alley for some great food, great adult beverages, and great live music from Souler Power, one of the bands featured in the Joe Lee film. Mix and mingle with the filmmakers and other film fans and enjoy a great celebration of opening night.
Saturday, June 23
Like the previous Frederick Film Festivals, Saturday is the busiest film day. The majority of the features and shorts will be screened over the entire day at two venues: The Weinberg Center and the Cultural Arts Center across the street. Events in the Cultural Arts Center include the High School Filmmaker Competition, where students from seven counties will vie for prizes donated by Sony; and the 72 Film Fest block of films that will highlight the winners of last year's 72 Film Fest. Also at the CAC will be blocks of short films from all over the world.
Meanwhile, Saturday at the Weinberg Center will highlight some of the acclaimed feature films from local, regional, national, and international filmmakers. These films include several selections that premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) earlier this year such as Tim Sutton's beautiful "Pavillion", Matt Ruskin's crime drama "Booster", and Avi Zev Weider's future-looking documentary "Welcome to the Machine". The regional filmmaking community is represented as well by feature films such as West Virginia's Edward Mensore's thriller "The Deposition" and Maryland's own Francis Abbey's world premiere comedy "6 Nonsmokers."
Saturday evening will have the documentary "The Mountain Music Project" with examines the connections in tradition fiddle music in Appalachia and in the Himilayas. Tara Linhardt, one of the musicians who traveled to Nepal to talk to and play music with the traditional Nepalese musicians will be on hand to discuss the film. Following the film will be a reception in the Weinberg where the audience will get a chance to meet filmmakers from the entire weekend, enjoy some refreshments, and listen to music in the spirit of evening's film provided by the acclaimed musical act Dead Men's Hollow.
Sunday, June 24
Compelling and thought-provoking documentaries have long been a hallmark of the Frederick Film Festival and Sunday's line up at the Weinberg Center highlights quite a few of the most important ones at the 2012 F3. Selections this year include an examination of the lives of migrant farm women called "After I Pick the Fruit", an inside look at shopping cart racing on the streets of North Vancouver entitled "Carts of Darkness"; and a look at the very last roll of of Kodachrome film which was given to legendary photographer Steve McCurry and his journey was documented in the short film "Final Exposure" by Frederick filmmaker Hans Weise for National Geographic.
Perhaps of particular interest to the Frederick Film Fest audience is the film "Semper Fi: Always Faithful" which will screen at the festival on Sunday. The details the heart-rending story of Marine Corps Master Sgt. Jerry Ensminger, a Marine for nearly 25 years whose daughter, Janey, died of a rare type of leukemia. Trying to make sense of her death sent him on a search for answers that led to the shocking discovery of a Marine Corps cover-up of one of the largest water contamination incidents in US history. His fight reveals a grave injustice at North Carolina's Camp Lejeune and a looming environmental crisis at military sites across the country. Ensminger will be present at the screening for questions.

The Frederick Film Festival -the F3 - is a result of a partnership between Frederick's premiere performing arts venue, the Weinberg Center for the Arts, and Frederick's film organization CinemArts, who have been bringing underscreened, independent, and foreign film to Frederick on a biweekly basis for nearly 7 years.
The purpose of the partnership is to provide an opportunity for a world-class film festival in Frederick and to promote a wide range of films. Films on the schedule include acclaimed foreign films, documentaries and independent films, most being shown for the first time in Frederick, some for the first time in the region, and some for the first time on the East Coast. The F3 also features works from Maryland fimmakers.
