(prHWY.com) June 5, 2012 - Fontana, CA -- 5 June 2012, USA (Royalpharmacyrx.com): A new clinical study has shed light on the negative impacts of naphthalene, an environmental pollutant to be linked with chromosomal aberrations (CAs) in children. The chemical that was previously related to cancer was found to cause chromosomal translocations, which is a more potent and long-term condition of CA.
Naphthalene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) class of air pollutant, which has been classified as a potential carcinogen by the International Agency for Cancer Research. This clinical finding is said to be the first one in this regard that establish the link between CA and children.
Earlier researchers carried out on this chemical have proved that prenatal exposure to this detrimental pollutant aggravates the chances of IQ complications, chromosomal aberrations as well as childhood obesity.
The study was conducted on around 113 children, all in their age of 5 years and measured the levels of 1- and 2-naphthol, metabolites of naphthalene in urine. The result proved that around 30 kids had CAs with approximately 11 of them having translocations.
They also established that increasing the concentration of the chemical by twice the amounts of 1- and 2-naphthol, the chances of translocations enhanced by 1.55 and 1.92 respectively. CAs was also found in the WBCs of children by fluorescent in situ hybridization technique but no link was found.
Manuela A. Orjuela, MD and author of the study said that translocations generally result in long term effect with some possessing the ability to repair the accumulated damage but every individual has a different capacity to repair their damage.
While, Frederica Perera, DrPH, senior author claimed that the clinical investigations have further broaden the negative aspects of carcinogenic pollutants of air on the younger kids and their degree of susceptibility to the detrimental chemicals.
Naphthalene is a common constituent of mothball fumes, tobacco smoke, automotive exhaust, cooking, heating and paint fumes that are particularly found in urban environment; whereas, fumes of coal or wood of biomass stoves are sources of naphthalene of rural life.
