Bed bugs and ants and termites, oh my!
New information from a new pest control company in Arizona about keeping their homes free of scorpions and pests
(prHWY.com) March 11, 2012 - Gilbert, AZ -- Most of us cheer when the cold weather breaks. But this year, the unseasonably warm winter has left many cities, on the East Coast and spread across the map, with an excess of critters like bedbugs, ticks, ants and termites.

The problem is caused when insects that hide out during cold months emerge from hiding places early, and wreak havoc on homes and gardens. In colder weather, some of the most worrisome and annoying pests freeze and die out before spring arrives. Not so this year.

The result? There is greater need for professional companies to help property owners seek out and destroy insects that can cause health risks, damage to property and a compromise in hygiene conditions.

Bed bugs are seeing resurgence along the East Coast and throughout the west, as infestations have grown larger and become more difficult to control. These hemoparasitic insects feed on the blood of humans, usually while the host sleeps. They can be hard to find, as they hide in clothing, mattresses and in crevices in a floor or wall. They can come into the home on luggage, furniture or on items of clothing. While bed bug bites aren't deadly, they can leave itchy welts on the skin. An invasion of bed bugs that's not controlled can expand to the point that only dramatic and draconian action--such as removing furniture pieces and clothing from the home--can resolve.

Pest control experts are trained to find the hiding (and breeding) places of these annoying pests, helping homeowners combine pesticides with effective housecleaning to rid a dwelling of a bed bug problem.

In the case of outdoor ants and termites, as well as wasps and ticks, surviving colonies are more capable, earlier, of causing mischief and harm due to the early spring. Scorpions usually take up residence in the bark of trees, in leaves and on debris. When their hiding places are disturbed (through raking, sweeping or spring cleaning), they are likely to find a new spot, and it's just as likely to be inside a closet as outside in the yard.

Dozens of varieties of ants are already busily building tunnels and piles as spring sets in. They're known to be partial to shallow soil, moist wood, rocks, the underside of floors, sinks and tubs. Ticks, like bed bugs, feed on human blood, and can transmit diseases when they inject their saliva during feeding.

In response to the current expansion of insect infestations, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recommends the following:

Maintain a 1-inch gap between soil and wood portions of a building.

Keep mulch at least 15 inches from a foundation.

Seal cracks and small openings along the bottom of a house.

Get rid of sources of moisture or standing water.

Keep tree branches and other plants trimmed back from the house.

Screen windows and doors.

When problems appear, call a qualified pest professional without delay.
