If you've been following my articles and write ups, you may have noticed that I am a very big fan of homebrew and freeware games for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi. I was actually a little bit worried about upgrading to the new Nintendo 3DS console, because I didn't want to lose the ability to play my homebrew games and apps, of which I have several hundred on my
R4i Gold card.
As luck would have it, I was all worried for no reason at all. Just a few days after the 3DS was released in Japan the
r4 3ds card was released as well, with an updated firmware and the ability to instantly use all of my Nintendo DS and Dsi homebrew games and apps on the new console.
So just what do you need in order to be able to play the hundreds of free games and app out there for the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS? Only 2 items, and an internet connection, to be able to download the games you want to play. First, you'll need the R4i 3DS Gold card. This is the homebrew player that will actually allow you to play your homebrew games on your new Nintendo 3DS.
The R4i uses micro SD cards to store the files, and to load them up on your 3DS. So you'll want to either buy the micro sd card in a package with the r4i, or you can buy it while you're waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Any micro SDHC card will work. And you can use cards that are up to 16GB in size, which is plenty of room. I use a 4GB card in comparison and have yet to really run out of space for my games and movies. If you want some extra space, and 8 Gig card is priced right in between the 4 and 16Gigs, and it's still affordable, at around $14.00 or so, depending on the store you buy it from.
Next, you'll need to get the updated firmware for the card.
This new firmware, which you can download from the website that is listed on the box of the
r4 3ds, is what will enable it with the 3ds support. Just copy all of the firmware files over to your micro sd card, and your menu system is ready to go.
And last, but most definitely not least, you want some cool homebrew and freeware games, right? Head over to google and do a search for DS homebrew, and you'll find a whole slew of web sites in the top 10 that review, talk about, and make available for download all of the homebrew games and apps that are currently available. Once you have downloaded those, just copy them over to the micro SD card and plug it into the 3ds. And you're all set to start playing.
