The worldwide sports nutrition industry sales have risen from £2.2 billion in 2004, to £3 billion by 2009.
The UK industry makes near a third of these figures - buying up £91 million of bodybuilding supplements in 2009.
Online stores have proved very popular and make up a large part of these sales, accounting for 24 per cent of total sales. The largest share of sales however is attributable to health food shops, which account for around 29 per cent of sales, followed by pharmacies with 26 per cent of sales.
