RetroGrade Brings True Vedic Astrology AI to the World -- Decoding the Deeper Science of Retrograde (Vakri) Planets
About RetroGrade RetroGrade is an AI-powered Vedic Astrology platform developed under Jothishi. It combines classical Jyotisha techniques -- dashas, varga charts, yogas, planetary strengths and avasthas -- with modern LLM and RAG technology
(prHWY.com) August 3, 2026 - Raleigh, NC -- RetroGrade, an AI Astrology platform built on authentic Vedic principles, today announced a product that goes far beyond the surface-level readings offered by most online astrology tools. Where conventional apps stop at a single Rasi chart, RetroGrade is engineered to reason the way a master Jyotishi does -- analysing dashas, varga charts, yogas, planetary strengths, and the subtle mechanics of planetary motion itself.
At the heart of the platform is a rigorous treatment of Retrograde (Vakri) motion -- one of the most misunderstood concepts in astrology.
What Retrograde (Vakri) Really Means -- Geocentric vs. Heliocentric
Retrograde is fundamentally a matter of perspective.
From a heliocentric (Sun-centred) view, no planet ever moves backward. Every planet orbits the Sun in the same direction, always forward. There is no true reversal in the heavens.
From a geocentric (Earth-centred) view -- the vantage point from which every Vedic horoscope is actually cast -- a planet appears to slow down, halt (station), drift backward against the fixed field of the Nakshatras, halt again, and then resume its forward course. This apparent backward drift is Vakri gati.
Because the birth chart is drawn as seen from Earth, this apparent motion is not a mere illusion to be dismissed -- it carries real karmic and symbolic weight in a chart, even though heliocentrically the planet never reversed at all.
Why and How Do Planets Turn Retrograde?
A planet appears to turn retrograde because of the relative motion between the Earth and that planet. As the faster body overtakes the slower one along the ecliptic, the outer planet seems -- from Earth -- to fall behind and move backward across the stars, much as a slower train appears to move backward when a faster one passes it. The planet then reaches its closest approach to Earth during this period, appearing brighter and, in classical Jyotisha, gaining additional strength (Chesta Bala).
Three Types of Motion -- Icha, Gyana and Kriya Shakti
In the Vedic framework, planetary movement is animated by three fundamental powers, giving rise to three essential types of motion:
Icha Shakti -- the power of will and desire
Gyana Shakti -- the power of knowledge and wisdom
Kriya Shakti -- the power of action
Depending on its Gati (speed), a planet is classified into different grades of retrograde motion, and one of these three shaktis dominates its expression.
For example, when Icha Shakti is high in a retrograde planet, it signals an intense, magnified desire attached to that planet's significations -- the exact flavour of that desire depending on the house the planet occupies and the Nakshatra in which it is placed. A retrograde planet is never simply "reversed"; it is a planet whose inner drive has turned inward and intensified.
Why the Rasi Chart Alone Is Never Enough
RetroGrade is built on a core truth that most consumer astrology ignores: the Rasi chart by itself is not sufficient for a genuine analysis. A proper Vedic reading requires:
Multiple dasha systems -- Vimshottari, Ashtottari, Shatabdika and others -- cross-referenced, not a single timeline
Nakshatra placements of every planet examined across all the varga (divisional) charts, not just D-1
Analysis of each varga chart individually before forming and confirming an opinion
Identification of the yogas in the chart -- with Raja Yogas understood as the karmic bonds carried into this life
Distinguishing natural and functional benefics and malefics
Measuring the true strength of planets through Shadbala and the other balas
Reading the Avasthas (states) of the planets
RetroGrade is programmed to answer using all of these techniques -- the very layers that more than 95% of astrologers skip, often because they were never trained in them.
Built by Agents, Grounded in Domain Mastery
Under the hood, RetroGrade is powered by 1,000+ programmed questions orchestrated through intelligent agents, mapping to an estimated 14,000 most-probable questions a customer could ask. The model currently delivers around 70% accuracy, and -- through an LLM paired with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) -- is designed to keep learning over time, targeting roughly 90% accuracy as it matures.
A One-Person-Company Blueprint for the Future
RetroGrade is also a story about what is now possible. Pranav Anand, a 12th-standard student, helped Anand Vadakepat of Jothishi build this product -- a striking example of how, with genuine domain knowledge and modern AI tools, a single individual can create what once required an entire team. It is a preview of the one-person company of the future.
