Mixed Reactions from Consumers Surface after Tesco Makes a Move to Take Over Giraffe
With the acquisition of UK family restaurant chain, Giraffe, to supermarket giant Tesco, the move has been met with both praise and caution from consumers and critics alike.
(prHWY.com) March 17, 2013 - london, United Kingdom -- It was recently announced that Tesco, the UK's biggest superstore chain, would purchase the popular family dining restaurant, Giraffe. This takeover was viewed by many to be a savvy attempt for Tesco to expand their company image and revitalise their struggling retail sales.

Then again, plans for installing Giraffe outlets within existing Tesco stores garnered mixed reactions from critics and consumers. Such a strategy would bridge the gap between retail and dining, but the question remains, "will this prove to be a beneficial move for Tesco or will it be to their detriment like other ill-fated business takeovers?"

While Giraffe has never experienced a serious issue with regards to financial problems and has a good standing with customers across the UK, the company's agreement to be handled by Tesco suggests a more business-oriented direction to help boost a wider exposure.

But others are wary of this new partnership, given that not all business deals between a Goliath corporation and a David enterprise turn out to have a happy ending; case in point--beauty retailer The Body Shop's sale to cosmetics supergiant, L'Oreal. The Body Shop co-founder, Gordon Roddick, expressed his regret over selling his company to the French beauty megabrand, given their controversy surrounding the testing of products on animals.

Roddick states thus about his business misstep: "We made the very bad mistake of becoming a public company. It is the antithesis of becoming a human company."

But Tesco remains optimistic about their decision to incorporate Giraffe into their brand, given that loyal customers of the family-friendly chain is also a key demographic that Tesco wants to shop within their stores. Whether the business model of Tesco will succeed or fail remains to be seen, but given how Giraffe has a clean-cut reputation for providing quality food and service, Tesco might just be served a good dose of financial optimism.
