(prHWY.com) March 8, 2013 - CA, CA -- California, Mar 08, 2013 - A waterjet uses a high pressure stream of water to cut or clean materials. The cutter is often connected to a high-pressure water pump with the water being ejected from the nozzle, which then cuts through the material with high-speed water. There may be additives in the form of abrasives that help with the process.
While at first you may not expect water to be such a powerful cutting tool, waterjets have the ability to cut through as much as an eight-inch stainless steel plate and 10 inches of aluminum plate.
Waterjet Cutting - is the preferred method for materials that are sensitive to the high temperatures often generated when using other methods. Since there is no heat-affected zone, this minimizes the effects of heat, allowing metal to be cut without altering or damaging the surface of the materials being cut.
Waterjets are considered a green technology. For one, there is no hazardous waste produced in the process of cutting. Secondly, since large pieces of reusable scrap material can be cut off, a waterjet prevents unnecessary waste that happens when using traditional cutting methods.
The water used in water jet machining systems is pressurized between twenty and sixty thousand pounds per square inch (PSI) depending on the type of material being cut. The highly pressurized water is released through a tiny hole called "jewel" which is typically 0.007" to 0.015" in diameter, creating a very high velocity beam of water capable of cutting soft materials.
Waterjet Cutting Machine - Water jet machining process is controlled with the help of computer numeric control (CNC) software that guides the water jet nozzle according to the lines and arcs of a computer aided design (CAD) drawing. The CAD drawing is a three dimensional (3D) graphic representation of parts that are to be fabricated. The technology has many advantages such as easy to use components, quick assembly process, reduced turn around time on the machine, complementariness to other machining techniques, and cutting without heating the material.
There are even more environmental advantages to using a waterjet for cutting your steel or aluminum. The waterjet uses very little water. It turns out to be about one half to one gallon of water used per minute. The amount depends on the cutting head orifice size.
