Homeowners Step Up Purchases of Upgrades To Strengthen Screened Enclosures Over Winter, Before Atlantic Storm Season, President

More South Florida homeowners are ordering mid-winter patio cover and screened enclosure upgrades this year to protect their property investments in advance of the Atlantic storm season, Christopher Noe, president of Venetian Builders, Inc., Miami, said today.

The website of the National Hurricane Center, nhc.noaa.gov, says the Atlantic named hurricane season officially begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. "Mother Nature doesn't always follow a schedule, of course, and it's not unusual for storms to occur before or after the seasonal dates," Noe said.

In 2012, for the third year running, the Atlantic spawned 19 named storms, nhc.noaa.gov reported. Seven were hurricanes, including Sandy, whose devastating fury landed full-force on the mid-Atlantic and parts of New England.

The website has not forecast storm occurrence and severity for 2013.

"By acting early, smart homeowners beat the rush and make certain their properties will be ready for the high wind and rain that named storms bring," Noe said.

Noe cautioned that storm damage can't be predicted. "There's never a guarantee against storm damage," Noe said. "But you can, with judicious preparation, reduce the likelihood of serious loss."

A Venetian Builders upgrade for a screened patio enclosure, patio cover or screen pool enclosure may include "K" framing or cable corner bracing, additional roof bracing, bigger and thicker gusset plates and stronger corrosion-resistant fasteners. Upgrades are intended to transfer wind loads to the base of the structure, away from the walls.
