At least two militaries of the world have issued smart phones with Android GPS mapping capabilities to soldiers, which is not surprising considering the reliability of these apps.

"The U.S. government started releasing secure Android phones with Android mapping software to its soldiers this 2012," says Chinavasion PR manager Rose Li. "Indian army personnel have also been issued Android phones with similar GPS mapping software to monitor the movements of Naxal groups."
Li explains that Android GPS apps allow military commanders to instantly identify where their troops are and more easily pinpoint areas of attention. This is especially important when soldiers are engaged in unfamiliar territory.
"It is very difficult for a soldier to pinpoint his location to commanders when they are under fire" says Li. "A phone with an Android map on hand will let them quickly share their exact location to friendly forces, as well as identify the nearby geography to better plan out troop movements."
Why do these countries rely on an Android navigation app for military purposes? Li says it all boils down to reliability.
"Google has spent a lot of time, effort and money refining its Android GPS maps. This has made Google's maps much more accurate and dependable than other mapping software.
"While Google initially did this for civilian purposes, like with Chinavasion's rugged FortisX shockproof smart phone, militaries all over the world have recognized the value of adopting the existing mapping software instead of creating their own."
