Scottsdale, AZ ( December 27, 2012 - NationalQuotes has learned that snowbirds who vacation in Florida during the winter should ensure they have proper auto insurance coverage. If a vehicle is present in Florida for at least 90 days out of the year, then the driver needs to register the vehicle and meet the minimum state requirements for auto insurance coverage.

Penny Gusner, consumer analyst of, reported, "If you register a car in Florida, you need to have Florida insurance." Olsen-Doolan explained that in order to meet state laws, individuals should hold a minimum of $10,000 worth of personal injury protection as well as a minimum of $10,000 worth of property damage under their liability coverage policies.

Florida's car insurance rates are some of the most expensive in the nation, forcing many to choose to rely on their home-state car insurance coverage, but snowbirds who do not have car insurance coverage while residing in Florida could experience problems filing auto insurance claims through their home state.

If the individual's legal residency is in Pennsylvania and an accident occurs in Florida, "it's possible that the Pennsylvania insurer could deny claims, stating misrepresentation about where the car was located," stated Olsen-Doolan.

To help save on insurance rates, drivers whose cars are completely paid off can choose to surrender their license plates and vehicle registration when returning home from Florida and then renew the coverage when they come back next winter.

David Thompson, a teacher for the Florida Association of Insurance Agents, cautions against suspending coverage for vehicles that reside in Florida year round. "There's a huge potential for financial disaster," he said. "The least expensive choice today is many times the most expensive choice after a claim takes place."

National Quotes' research has shown that many snowbirds leave their vehicle in Florida year round and drop certain coverage while they reside in their home state, which is not always the best decision. If comprehensive coverage is dropped and a hurricane wrecks the vehicle, then the owner cannot file a claim.

When searching for affordable car insurance coverage, recommends drivers to request multiple auto insurance quotes to ensure the best rates while retaining proper coverage in case of an accident.
