Getting Through a Jackson Hole Winter
You have finally gotten a chance to invest in Jackson Hole real estate and are now happily settled in your cozy new home. You shake your head and laugh wryly when the locals tell you winter is coming, with visions of watching movies.

Before winter sets in, get an inspector to check your furnace, ducts and vents.
If needed, check your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and test fire extinguishers.
If your home has a fireplace, clean out the flue and cap the chimney to prevent pests from getting in.
Stock up on additional fuel for emergency purposes -- this includes gas for the furnace, heaters and firewood.
Check your plumbing -- the real estate in Jackson Hole often showcases winter proof pipes, but make sure that the insulation is sound to avoid frozen or burst pipes.
Weather strip and snow proof your windows and doors to prevent heat from escaping or cold from coming in. This simple tip can make the difference between freezing your butt off and that cozy evening you have been dreaming about. Replace cracked glass or cracked screens. Once it ices over this can be difficult to do.
Before the first big storm rolls in, prepare rock salt and sand to de-ice and add traction to your driveways. Keep them near the front door, in the foyer or somewhere handy.
Make sure you have snow removal equipment handy in case the Teton Mountains dump a year's worth of snow on you.
Inspect the roof and replace worn tiles. Inspect the gutters and insulation around the roof that could leak heat during the winter.
Make sure your car is winterized too!
Inspect your home foundation and screen or seal any crawlspaces where animals might seek shelter. You do not want to spend the majority of January hunting for that stray cat that somehow got in...and died.
Trim trees close to your home and prepare your garden for the winter by draining garden hoses and planting the bulbs for spring (if you wish.)
Stock up on emergency rations, like canned goods, for exceptionally snowy days. You may want to prepare a few extra meals to keep in the freezer too.
Prepare an emergency kit for blackouts or storms.
A sturdy flashlight with extra batteries
Wax candles and matches
A first aid kit with extra rations of your specific medication i.e. inhalers
Keep extra blankets around your home
Extra food/dry rations just in case
Once you have made all the preparations, you are all set to enjoy your very first Jackson Hole winter!
