Newmarket, Australia (prHWY.com) December 11, 2012 - During Aussie summers we expect to endure a heat wave from time to time but this year, it's looking like one is already on its way! There are several health and nutrition concerns to keep in mind with the extreme heat and humidity but the most important is to stay well hydrated! The human body is approximately 60% water, and is used by every part of your body for many different purposes.

Although the reason your body sweats is to regulate your core temperature and to keep you cool, you lose water and electrolytes in the process, which need to be replaced. Sunburns, physical activity and pre-existing illness can also increase your fluid needs!

Here are a few tips for replacing fluid losses and reducing your risk of dehydration this summer:

- Aim to drink at least 2-3 litres of water each day, plus extra to replace fluid losses through sweat.

- If you feel like you're drinking a lot of water and can't quench your thirst, have an electrolyte replacement drink, such as hydrolyte.

- Limit alcoholic beverages as these can act as diuretics and promote further fluid loss and dehydration.

- Another great way to stay hydrated that may not seem as obvious is through food! Fruits and vegetables naturally contain water as well as vitamins and minerals, which are also lost when you sweat. Fresh watermelon is a perfect example of how food can keep you hydrated as it contains 92% water by weight!

Keep in mind that thirst is the first sign of dehydration, so aim to drink sufficient amounts of fluids before you feel thirsty in order to prevent dehydration.
