Queensland, Australia (prHWY.com) December 7, 2012 - Government agencies are concerned with several health concerns of labourers who are working in any commercial cleaning company most especially those who are handling chemical substances and suffer from contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is a skin disorder where the skin shows negative skin reactions or allergies from various irritating substances. When the skin gets direct contact with a harsh irritant, the skin usually turns red or itchy and burning rashes appears. Depending on a person's hypersensitive reaction and on the type of substance, contact dermatitis can irritate the skin for as short as a minute up to several days. People rendering commercial cleaning services and those who use various cleaning products normally experience this skin condition. Many cleaning solutions such as bleach, detergents, and chemical or natural products can cause skin irritation. There are three main types of this disease but irritant contact dermatitis is the most common form. Constant and prolonged exposure to substances that dry and damages the skin is an example of irritant contact dermatitis. Many commercial cleaning products are the main sources of irritant contact dermatitis.

Since most cleaners use their hands to clean and apply cleaning solutions, their hands are mostly susceptible to the disease. Irritant contact dermatitis can cause eczema and further damages the skin. Itching and redness not only occurs but some suffers from blistering, swelling, cracking, and flaking. Due to this condition, workers will have a lot of difficulty with their commercial cleaning services tasks. Severe contact dermatitis can force a worker to look for a different job. Workers however can find different ways to avoid skin irritation. They should avoid using cleaning products which causes the irritation. Due to this occupational hazard, government agencies obligated any commercial cleaning company to help the workers prevent this disease. The company should provide proper personal protective equipment to their workers when doing any types of cleaning jobs and when handling harmful cleaning products. Gloves protect the hands. They should also assess the toxicity of the chemical used and find safer alternatives. They should also provide useful cleaning tools and assist cleaners who are suffering from contact dermatitis.
