TLW Solicitors, a personal injury law firm based near Newcastle upon Tyne, has recently branched into medical negligence. Here, medical negligence solicitor and head of department Stephen Winn reveals how people can benefit from this new service.
Why has TLW Solicitors decided to introduce a medical negligence department?
The firm deals with personal injury claims and as a result of the excellent service provided to pre-vious and existing clients the firm were getting a lot of enquiries about medical negligence claims. It seemed like a natural progression to branch into this area of law, so they've brought me in to head up the new department.
What was your career path before joining the firm?
Before I became a medical negligence solicitor, I was a nurse for 10 years, mainly on intensive care. I was still working as a nurse while I completed my law degree, qualifying as a solicitor in 2007. Since then I've worked almost exclusively in medical negligence acting for claimants.
Who can benefit from this new service?
Anyone who thinks they've been a victim of medical negligence or mistreated while in hospital or by their GP. We cover many types of medical negligence claims, from delayed diagnosis, poor surgery and bad reactions to drugs, to cosmetic surgery, dental treatment and poor nursing care. I've previously been involved in successful medical negligence claims in Newcastle ranging from surgical implements that have been left in patients, to misdiagnoses of fractures, birth injuries and spinal surgery going wrong.
People go into hospital for all sorts of different reasons and in the vast majority of cases everything is absolutely fine. For a very small amount of cases things do go wrong, but it is not always medical negligence. However, if someone is at fault, and often the consequences are catastrophic, then the injured person may be entitled to compensation, and this is where we can help guide you through the medical negligence claim process.
What would you say to people who are uncertain about making a medical negligence claim?
If people are uncertain, then they should definitely get in touch. I would always recommend a per-son complain if they feel they've been mistreated or injured as the result of poor medical care.
Medical negligence claims can be quite a complex and lengthy. It can also be a very stressful, emo-tive and frightening time, but with my medical negligence expertise and medical knowledge, I am here to help at every stage and make it as stress free and possible.
Why should someone choose TLW Solicitors to make a claim?
TLW has a long history of successful personal injury claims due to their proactive and robust ethos, that combined with my expertise and knowledge in medical negligence claims makes TLW the ideal place to seek legal advice if you are unhappy with any medical treatment you have received. We are Newcastle based but we don't have any geographical boundaries. We have clients from all over the UK.
What are your hopes for the medical negligence department at TWL Solicitors?
I'm hoping the department will grow and expand and we become recognised for excellence and success the same as the personal injury department.
