San Bernardino Needy Receive Early Thanksgiving Meal reports Presta Kitchen
Area kitchens provide turkey and fixings to more than 2,000 people

Thanksgiving Day a couple of days early by feeding hundreds of needy people.
At The World Way Outreach mission, between 1,500 and 2,000 people enjoyed a pre-
Thanksgiving meal while approximately 700 attended the dinner offered by the St.
Bernardine Medical Center, the 18th year the medical facility has had such festivities.
According to The Way World Outreach pastor, Marco Garcia, "Most of the food came from
people in our congregation. Many of them have moved from needing help to offering help."
More than 400 volunteers, made up both of members of the community and congregation
members pitched in to help during the event, Garcia said.
A long line of people that wrapped around the mission's newly obtained building was
visible during the afternoon.
Young and old alike took advantage of the free meal. Valley College student Melissa Lay,
20, lives only a few blocks away from the church and decided to take part, along with 50-
year-old Jason Gibbs, who lives "where I park my truck."
Lay learned about the event from people with the church, who stopped at every residence in
her neighborhood to hand out invitations.
Gibbs found out about the meal while eating at a fast-food restaurant, where a woman was
passing out fliers with the information.
St. Bernardine also offered free flu shots, dental screenings, and blood pressure checks
in addition to the free meal.
Additionally, families were able to select free outerwear that had been donated through a
joint effort between St. Bernardine and the Community Hospital of San Bernardino.
