Study finds 'Y' Most Stressed Out Generation reports DaniJohnson.com
Money and Relationship Worries Conspire to Cause Anxiety, Depression

That's according to the Australian Psychological Society, which reports that those under 35 are claiming to have "significantly more concerns" about their psychological well being than older and younger Australians. The organization recently conducted a national stress and wellbeing survey.
Survey results indicate personal financial issues are the largest cause of stress, affecting six in 10 members of Generation Y, followed by family issues, which cause stress for 50% of respondents.
Meanwhile, fewer than half of baby boomers are anxious about money. Rather, they worry about health and family issues.
Those under 25 cite education and studies as their largest stress trigger. Relationship and friendship issues follow.
Younger generations tend to cope with stress by sleeping more, visiting social networking websites, playing video games or listening to music, while avoiding situations or individuals who cause them anxiety. Fifty percent of Australia's adults say finances are their biggest worry.
"People are more stressed about their jobs this year and more worried they could lose their jobs,'' APS executive director Lyn Littlefield said yesterday.
"The high rate of anxiety and depression is quite surprising. I think people are much busier and there's much more going on in their lives they have to cope with.''
The survey indicates that men often cope with stress by drinking alcohol while women turn to shopping, comfort food, or talking about their problems with family or friends.
About 20% of Australians are seeking counseling regarding work and parenting issues. Nearly one million are taking advantage of government-subsidized therapy annually. The number of Australian therapy patients is growing by 20 percent each year, a rate 10 times as fast as that of Australians taking antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs.
That is fine by Australian Medical Association President Steve Hambleton, who said his organization encourages seeking therapy as an alternative to the old "pop a pill" mentality. "Reaching for a pill is not the right decision on many occasions,'' he said. "We need to be thinking about talking therapies, and counseling. Part of the problem in our society is we seek an 'instant fix' view that's not realistic. Let's look at the environment (that is causing stress) and try to fix it first.''
On the other hand, those experiencing undue, ongoing stress may suffer from a more serious condition, such as schizophrenia, and therefore require medical treatment, said Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists President Maria Tomasic. "Many people are undiagnosed and untreated," she said. "You often have to convince people that medication will be beneficial.''
