Electrical Engineer Expert says Most Have Wrong Type of Detector reports CheckThisHouse.com
States that having a proper detector is the cheapest life insurance

"Statistics show that smoke alarms save lives," said Bart Humphreys, spokesperson for the College Station Fire Department. "The majority of fire deaths happen in the home and at night. A working smoke alarm is the only thing that will wake you up."
B. Don Russell is a Texas A&M professor of electrical engineering, and notes that it is not only the batteries that may need to be changed or replaced.
Russell has investigated thousands of smoke alarms for over one decade, and has noted that 90% of homes have an inappropriate type of alarm.
He notes that the alarm that many use is an ionization detector.
"Those are the ones that work very quickly to slow developing fires, electrical fires."
Russell suggests that photoelectric detectors are available; however, they often cost as much as twice the price as the ionization detectors.
"The best recommendation is for people to use a combination of ionization and photoelectric detectors," Russell said.
Russell has been featured in a recent NBC Today show for his finding in research regarding smoke detectors. The Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and Texas A&M Engineering and Extension Service made their debuts for their research efforts on the matter.
Russell stated that the TEES team has made strong efforts to delineate information to the masses regarding the detector distinctions. They have even attempted to pitch their findings to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
"This is an extremely important issue that shouldn't be ignored because there are hundreds of deaths each year," Russell said. "It's the cheapest insurance you can buy."
