Are Family-Friendly Video Games Offering Less Value to Players?
The video game industry is taking a noticeable turn toward marketing to a more family friendly audience. While this is increasing sales amongst that demographic, is it coming at a cost for the more long-standing video game players out there?

While catering for a new audience certainly isn't a bad marketing ploy, many of the industries 'hardcore' fans (a collection of players who like their games challenging and long in terms of game play hours,) are feeling jilted by this developing trend.
During a recent interview, prominent video game blogger and self-confessed 'hardcore gamer,' Darcy Stach weighed in on whether or not the video game industry is beginning to turn its back on its most loyal faction of fans.
"There's no denying that the video game industry has certainly realigned its focus in terms of who they're marketing new release titles to," said Stach.
"Novelty controllers like the 'XBOX Kinect' and 'Playstation Move' certainly aren't aim at the hardcore crowd, that's for sure. I don't think this is really what is concerning long-time gamers, however, but instead it is the stark difference in difficulty and length of video games in recent years that are causing the most angst."
"I think a lot of 'traditional' gamers are used to paying their money and, in return, receiving a game that they would be challenged by and that, if played in its entirety, would offer 40+ hours worth of game play - like the best flight simulator games of yesteryear. Older gamers are feeling ripped off by modern games as they perceive them to be a lot easier and, therefore, offering less value," concluded Stach.
Despite a growing concern amongst the most established fan bases, video game developers are unlikely to be overly concerned. As purchase orders amongst the 'families' demographic continues to climb, the future of the video game industry both in the United States and across the globe is likely to continue catering to those whom are seeking titles which boast family-friendly content and party-like game play.
As disheartened as they appear to be, the hardcore gamer contingent is predicted to find solace in older, more traditional video game titles with a resurgence of challenging, PC-based games seen to be coming back into favour. Original IPs such as Assassins Creed and Call of Duty will ensure that dedicated fans are not lost to the console market complete, however, in terms of the direction of the industry as a whole, it appears that the future will be family-friendly, even if that means shorter, less challenging release titles.
