NY, NY (prHWY.com) November 14, 2012 - Leaders can now reliably improve how they implement organizational change

ANN ARBOR -- October 19, 2012 -- In 1994, Harvard Business School professor and consultant John Kotter proclaimed that 70% of organizational change initiatives fail. He did not conduct an empirical study to prove this finding. It was his common sense finding of his over 30 years of experience watching organizations try, and fail, to successfully implement change. It is almost 20 years since Kotter's proclamation. How are organizational change initiative failure rates today? The consensus is between 60% and 90%. Neither the billion dollar consulting industry, nor academic researchers have yet discovered the key. Change management expert Ron Koller has devoted the last 5 years of his career attempting to bridge the gap between industry consultants and academic researchers. His research can be found here: Change Management Study.

Has he found the answer?

Koller is a change management consultant with over 20 years of experience working with companies such as Microsoft, NASA, Ford Motor Company, and Shell Petroleum, just to name a few. He is the co-author of Whole-Scale Change: Unleashing the Magic in Organizations. He has also had his survey research work published at the peer-reviewed journal level. What Ron found is that many other researchers and change experts did have all the pieces are parts, but not put together in such a way that leaders could benefit from their findings. He is now replicating some pieces of other researcher's work, as well as creating more fine-tuned surveys that will meet the unique needs of different organizations all over the world.

One size does NOT fit all

One thing that Ron found in his quest for a valid and relevant change management tool is that almost all researchers limit the customization of their surveys for their own self-interest. Researchers build up benchmark data so they can show PowerPoint presentations to leaders and show them how they stack up to other companies. While this may satisfy the interest of a few leaders, it has limited the effectiveness of organizational change surveys. The Change Management Research begins in 2013. Koller is now enrolling progressive organizations that want to successfully implement their strategic initiatives next year. One general manager of a Fortune 500 company commented as follows: "This new change assessment will revolutionize how we course-correct our organizational change initiatives."
