Prof. SSS Kumar of IIM Kozhikode said though students from the engineering background dominate the candidate pool, the other streams from which there have been increased applications are agriculture, architecture, pharmaceutical sciences and chartered accountancy. The numbers of applications have shrunk for the humanities and medical backgrounds.
He mentioned that applications from the states like Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have increased. "There has been a 2.7 per cent increase in the number of applications from Odisha, from 5,457 to 5,778. Last year, the number of applications from Chhattisgarh was 3,003, which stands at 3, 222 this year. From Jharkhand, 6,591 candidates have applied this year compared to 6,361 last year," shared Prof Kumar.
"The shift in the candidate pool in terms of gender and social balance, as well as work experience, is a positive indication that our society is becoming more aware of the opportunities that are available," said Prof. Kumar.
Dr. Debashis Chatterjee, director, IIM Kozhikode, said: "The rise in the number of CAT takers is a positive indication that people have restored faith in the exam. The higher number of experienced candidates has also indicated that the economy is going to improve over the next two to three years."
Soumitra Roy, MD, Prometric India, said, "We have completed four days of testing. By now, over 36,000 students have taken the CAT 2012. Resolving any operational and technical issues that come up during testing is part of Prometric's standard operating procedure. We have a robust infrastructure in place to identify and resolve issues as they surface."
CAT 2012 has started from October 11. The exam will be conducted for 21 days till November 6.
