Artist RAJIV PURI'S works on display at the Visual Arts Gallery, IHC, offer a panoramic view of a single wanderer and the lush bounty that Nature is. NAVNEET MENDIRATTA reports
It would be so clichéd to quote Robert Frost here but the truth remains that his much quoted lines -- The woods are lovely, dark and deep -- inevitably flit through the mind as you set on to a visual journey laid out by the artist Rajiv Puri and TAD Arts at Visual Arts Gallery.
And the woods here are reflective -- flaming orange at one point as if they have been set on fire; dull, intense and inviting at the other and deep and dark at yet another point as if forbidding you to even enter. But yes moods they all do reflect daring you to give them a pass.
"Woods are what I have known all my life," says the self-taught hand behind these brilliant artworks that have been put under the title Live Green. A chartered accountant by profession and now based out of Dubai, Rajiv Puri, revels in the creative let-out his passion allows him to indulge in.
"I have spent most of my life in Nairobi and got to know these woods from up close. The forest has a great appeal to my mind as if they fill my soul somewhere. These woods are what bring happiness and peace to me. They are my second home..." he trails off, a tad uncomfortable at being prodded.
Media shy and reticent, he would much rather hang around in the periphery and watch the guests go through his works.
"The art is much to be absorbed and taken in... either it connects at some point or it just gets lost," he shrugs by way of explanation, leaving you to make what you want of it and challenging you at the same time to decipher some abstract and some definitive forms that feed a wanderer's soul.
His medium is oil on canvas, tools palette knife and pencil -- by his admission, Puri is strictly not the paint brush kinds -- and palette flaming orange, red, green and blue -- all that a vibrant landscape demands.
"In this particular exhibition, Puri has aspired towards the higher aims of art in his landscapes, one that depict a life form harmonising the three fundamentals -- land, water and sky. The anonymity of landscapes lies in a transitional space, reminiscent of the wilderness, faced with the outset of self-conscious nostalgia," reflects Niten Mehta, Director, TAD Arts of Puri. Incidentally, this is not the first time that the gallery and artist have worked together.
"The response that Puri evokes from his collectors is amazing. I have seen many of them come back after each exhibition, other creating even more space for his works as they expand their collection. These are the people who have followed him closely, love his style and aesthetics and say they can never have their fill of his works!," he laughs.
Back to his works, Puri's canvasses remind you of the abstract expressionists of the 1960s and 70s who loved to play with colour and texture and just a hint of the form within.
For someone who has been exhibiting his works since 1995, Puri works on creating an imagery that is a sheer visual delight.
On till September 5, the exhibition is being hosted in association with myGREENkart.com and World Wildlife Fund(WWF).
