Peterborough, CA (prHWY.com) September 6, 2012 - August 06, 2012 - The Relko Groups' scaffolding has finally been dismounted, the trial runs have taken place, the health and safety assessments have been completed, the Dudley Zoo staff have had their training on how to run the chair lift and it's now live and ready for action, as from the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Vintage Chair Lift, which stopped operating at Dudley Zoo, West Midlands, over 10 years ago has now re-opened following a £117,000 grant and many, many visitors asking when it would be back up and running again. The chair lift at Dudley Zoo was first opened in 1958 by comic Richard Hearne. Richard played the madcap character Mr Pastry and English Cricketer John Price and was one of the first customers to ride it.

The Relko Group was over the moon when asked to help with this project, they remembered going on the Vintage Chair Lift as children.

The 41 chair, roller system and engine were re-vamped the twelve week project which saw The Relko Group removed the sixteen layers of old paint coatings and re-painting them with a specialist anti-corrosion paint system, that had to be matched exactly to the chair lifts former colour.

Dudley Zoo employed The Relko Group and other specialist teams for this twelve week project and although the weather was not on their side (due to painting and paint blasting not being able to take place in wet or rainy weather), the chair lift project at Dudley Zoo was still completed with in the twelve weeks, ready and raring to go for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Chair Lift at Dudley Zoo offers a two minute ride for families, who will get panoramic views of the borough from the top of Castle Hill, before gliding down 125ft on chairs attached to a cable. The design is similar to those in ski resorts and is one of only three in the United Kingdom, with the other two in Derbyshire and the Isle of Wight. Chief Executive Peter Suddock has said "It is a fantastic piece of machinery and a tribute to 1950s engineering techniques."

Among the first of the families to use the chair lift were Rachael Fullelove aged 43 years old, her partner Ian Round aged 47 years old and their six-year-old son Alex, all of Brierley Hill. Miss Fullelove said "It's really great to see the chairlift back again. I remember going on it when I was four."
