MAT 2012 Analysis@ Analysis shows MAT paper was moderate to difficult

Noida, India (prHWY.com) September 4, 2012 - AIMA conducted the third MAT of the year on September 2, 2012, in the paper-pencil-based format. The examination in the computer-based format will be held from September 8 onwards. The examination did not see many changes in the format. This article of MBAUniverse.com will analyse the paper in detail.

The examination had 200 questions and the duration was 150 minutes. The five sections were language comprehension, mathematical skills, data analysis & sufficiency, intelligence & critical reasoning and Indian & global environment. Each question carried one mark and for each wrong answer, there was negative marking of 0.25 marks. The total marks of the exam were 800. However, scores of Indian & global environment are not included in the scoring process. The overall difficulty level was moderate to tough.

Let us focus on the section-wise analysis.

Language comprehension

This section was equally divided between questions on reading comprehension and English usage. There were five reading comprehension passages. The other questions were from vocabulary, English grammar and usage.
The vocabulary questions were on antonyms, odd man out, jumbled words and fill in the blanks. The English usage section had questions on para jumbles, re-statement and the best essence of the given paragraph. The difficulty level of the section was moderate.

Data analysis & sufficiency

This section consisted of questions on data interpretation, data sufficiency and data comparison. DI area had 30 questions out of 40 while DS and data comparison together accounted for the rest. DI questions were on bar graph, line graph, pie chart and caselet. Solving DI questions required observation, calculations on comparison of fractions, average, percentage-based calculations, etc. Data sufficiency questions had two statements followed by the main question. The difficulty level was difficult.

Mathematical skills

The majority of the questions were on arithmetic, while the rest were on higher mathematics. The arithmetic section saw questions from time & work, pipes & cisterns, time & distance, boats & streams, averages, mixtures & alligations, numbers, equations, ratio, proportion & variation, percentage, profit & loss, partnership, geometry & mensuration and simple & compound interest.

Questions on higher mathematics were from trigonometry, heights & distance, permutation & combination and probability. The overall difficulty level was difficult.

Intelligence & critical reasoning

This section was a mix of analytical reasoning and critical reasoning. The analytical reasoning section had 32 questions and critical reasoning had eight questions. Analytical reasoning included questions on seating arrangement, direction sense, distribution, number & letter Series, blood relations, analogies, etc. The critical reasoning area had questions on assertion & reasons and cause & effect. The difficulty level was moderate.

Indian and global environment

This section had questions on business, current affairs, personalities & their associated fields, etc. The difficulty level of this section was moderate.
