Breast cancer screening - It's time for an upgrade
USA Aug 18, 2012 - In this post we'll look at thermography and how it could be utilised to improve breast cancer screening and cancer prevention.

When Janet heard the words "breast cancer" her mind went completely blank, she describes it as "life-stopping... I was in a mental vacuum and all I could feel was numb...it was surreal! - I thought why me, when did this begin and what do I do now?... I have never felt so alone"
This is a normal response by Janet and probably what many women feel when they are told that they have cancer.
The good news is that treatments for cancer have come a long way, not only in producing complete cures but also in securing remissions that can give a whole new lease on life. In fact the word cancer, albeit an unpleasant word, has been re-categorised by some as a "chronic disease condition" in a similar fashion to other chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Heart disease and Osteoarthritis. Many people live with cancer and end up dying from other old-age conditions.
But in regards to screening for breast cancer, there seems to be a lag in the discovery of a more accurate and timely biomarker (blood test) - we seem to be at a standstill (clinical inertia) when it comes to diagnostic options.
We still rely on the old diagnostic routine:
Monthly self breast examination
Annual Gynecological/MD
Mammogram
Ultrasound guided needle biopsy.
Don't misunderstand me, all of these are still valid and necessary tests, but it is not what we would expect in this highly sophisticated technological world, especially in the #1 cancer in women (after non melanoma skin cancers) that is appearing at an earlier age and an increasing rate.
As we move forward into genomic testing - the BRCA1/2 tests are becoming utilized more frequently in those women who have a family history of breast cancer. Although this is not a diagnosis, it does help to show and stratify a risk factor...in a similar fashion to a high blood cholesterol would be a risk factor for a heart attack - once known, it provides valuable information for a preventative-therapeutic plan.
Thermography
Another breast screening test is 'Thermography' - a non invasive digital infrared scan, which measures skin surface temperatures and is able to detect abnormal activity beneath the skin.
Astaxanthin Benefits - Thermography utilizes the fact that increased cellular activity is accompanied by a rise in temperature...therefore, thermography creates something like a regional 'fever' map. This increased temperature may reflect inflammation and therefore will produce a 'hot spot' over the area. Particularly in regards to breast cancer, it may detect early tissue abnormalities, before the cancer has had a chance to settle down, calcify and spread. You see cancer cells require lots of nutrients in order to grow and multiply rapidly and therefore they quickly establish new blood vessels, so as to provide sufficient blood flow for incoming supplies and nutrients. These new blood vessels and the increased activity give off heat which is detected by thermography. It is important to note that thermography does not diagnose cancer, but it does point out EARLY abnormalities - which is usually related to inflammation - and we know that inflammation is a precursor for cancer. Thermography provides an early-warning system and provides greater prognostic value than the more conventional diagnostic tools.
Developed over 30 years ago and now with over 800 peer reviewed studies, Thermography technology has greatly improved over the past decade, including the training required to read scans by thermographers. There is established appropriate guidelines and protocols, which now make thermography an outstanding serious tool, which should be utilised by doctors in the detection of breast abnormalities.
It is suggested that a screening thermogram be taken in the early 20s so as to establish a basic thermographic fingerprint - this baseline can be used for future active surveillance, ongoing monitoring as well as an early warning system for more aggressive action.
When we consider that mammograms are recommended around age 40, this is far too late to begin a screening program. Thermograms can detect abnormalities around ten years before they can be detected by mammograms.
Would you prefer to know that "a thief in the night is at the end of your street planning to break in, or that he is already at your doorstep?" I will take the earlier warning in order to prepare, resist and fight him off.
Astaxanthin Side Effects - Thermography should be embraced and utilized by the conventional medical system, it is not perfect but the statistics and results now show that it is a tremendous tool for the early detection of breast abnormalities including cancer. It is definitely an upgrade that is way over due.
Proactive steps for cancer prevention
In the meantime, proactive steps in the form of healthy nutrition, lifestyle and attitude should always be a way of life. Some of my suggestions for both preventative and maintenance of good breast health would include:
D.I.M - (Diiindoly methane) converts bad estrogens into benign estrogens
Curcumin - Has been shown to have anti-cancer properties
Green Tea - Sits on the cell's replication apparatus and prevents mutations
Astaxanthin - Has demonstrated anti-cancer activity in breast cell lines
Vitamin D3 - Important immune modulator including cell defense
Iodine - Naturally gravitates to breast tissue to help protect it from imbalances.
For your good health.
The benefits of Astaxanthin
Antioxidants prevent injuries caused by free radicals, the naturally-occurring toxic molecules that bombard the earth on a constant basis. And natural astaxanthin is by far the most powerful protection available.
Disarm free radicals of every kind for better health
Most antioxidants can only handle one free radical at a time, but our astaxanthin deal with multiple free radicals, with its unique molecular structure which captures and neutralises different types of free radicals:
Singlet oxygen radicals are rendered harmless
You're protected from Superoxide radicals
Hydroxyl radicals are repelled easily
You're safe from the ravages of Peroxyl radicals
Alkoxyl radicals and more have no effect on you
All these free radical types cause serious internal damage to your cellular structures, and they're responsible for any number of dangerous conditions including heart disease, cancer, inflammation, dementia and related cognitive decline. Thankfully, our natural astaxanthin's antioxidant properties and potential to prevent disease are unbeatable.
The super antioxidant from Astrasupreme
How does Astaxanthin work?
The unique structure of this amazing product lets it enter the biphospholipid layer of the cell membrane in a unique manner, spanning the outer membrane and inner surfaces of cells. This unique feature means our product acts as a ferocious free radical scavenger. In short astaxanthin removes free radicals from the outer surface of cells so free radicals can't gain entry. When they can't get in, they can't cause damage.
And it never becomes a pro-oxidant...
Most antioxidants themselves become oxidised, exhausted by the battle against free radicals. They can even become pro-oxidant free radicals.
Natural astaxanthin never becomes a pro-oxidant. So it never converts into a free radical. How? because of a special feature of its molecular structure called 'electron cloud sharing'. When astaxanthin breaks through the blood-brain barrier, it provides crucial antioxidant protection to the brain, spinal cord and CNS (central nervous system). This vital feature reduces free radical damage, which is known to bring about strokes, dementia and cognitive decline.
It also crosses the blood-retinal barrier in the eye, protecting the delicate retina fro free radical damage.
Clinical research - Proof that Astaxanthin really works
In-depth research has demonstrated our product's effectiveness in saupporting and maintaining:
your Cardiac health and good Cholesterol levels
Joint health and a reduction in silent inflammation
Rapid post-exercise recovery
healthy eyes, skin and vision
