Hicksville, NY (prHWY.com) August 18, 2012 - At I/O Developer conference held in June earlier this year, Google had announced that it would soon introduce the "Delta" updates for applications on the Android 2.3 Gigerbread+ devices. With the launch of this feature, users will no longer have to download the whole application all over again when an update is available. They will need to download the part of the app that has been added/updated. Usually when an update is rolled out for an application, Play Store downloads the full application. That consumes a lot of unnecessary bandwidth and battery. So the solution provided by Google is in the form of "delta" updates. "Delta" means the incremental difference. So the "Delta" between the old and new APKs would be downloaded instead on the whole application.

The smart app updates will benefit Google also as it will enable them to save a huge amount of bandwidth. This update went live with the 3.8.15 Play Store. Interesting to know is that this update will not affect the Android app developers in any way. There is no official word from Google yet but there have been a couple of videos showing the "Delta" update in process from credible sources.

To get the idea, one needs to download only about 3mb of data for the latest Instagram update for which the size of the app is 13mb. If large apps consisting of many assets and data are considered, one can save a lot of bandwidth. For example, if new levels are added in a big game then only the data for that new levels will need to be downloaded from the Play Store.

"Google has taken a very "smart" step by launching "Delta". Still many of the users are on 2G networks worldwide and this step from Google is a boon for them. This is a great news for Users, service providers as well as Google itself.", says Mr. Jayneel, Managing Director at OpenXcell Technolabs. Openxcell are the pioneers in Android app development.
