ShopBot Tools brings first-ever ShopBot Camp to South America
"Campo de ShopBot" celebrates the digital fabrication community

Ted Hall, founder and CEO of ShopBot Tools, explained, "ShopBot Camps are true grassroots gatherings that have sprung up around the U.S. ever since we started the company back in 1996." 'ShopBotters' from manufacturing and production facilities, home garages, community makerspaces and schools get together to show off their projects. It's a chance for the community to get together and share ideas, tips and generally enjoy the company of like-minded makers.
The Campo de ShopBot in Guatemala will be a "roving" camp; first visiting the Universidad Franciso Marroquin, home to a robust Digital Laboratory, and then holding a hands-on learning camp at the Woodworking Academy at the Hogar Rafael Ayau, an orphanage run by the local Orthodox Christian church. The Campo de ShopBot will provide ideas for digitally-designed and manufactured wood items that residents of the orphanage can make and sell to benefit their home.
A key sponsor of this Campo De ShopBot is T. Alan Russell, an American businessman, philanthropist and ShopBotter. Russell has donated a ShopBot to the orphanage's woodworking academy. Russell noted, "The young girls at Hogar Rafael Ayau have suffered physical, mental and sexual abuse. In this safe and supportive environment, they have a chance to heal and grow strong. The girls learn math in a hands-on way; they learn graphic design and computer skills; they gain tremendous self-confidence by succeeding at making beautiful objects; and they earn money from the work that they create. I feel like I'm really making a difference in their lives!"
The Campo de ShopBot will be held in Spanish, and will feature presentations by ShopBot's Chris Burns ("News about ShopBot and Developments in the Digital Fabrication Movement"), Universidad Franciso Marroquin, ShopBot Latin America's Santiago Laverde, as well as speakers from Hogar Rafael Ayau and its Woodworking Academy.
