Girls Pursue Dreams While Honing Valuable Life Skills
Ask any little girl what they want to be when they grow up and chances are they'll tell you they want to be a princess, ballerina or actress.
"There has been a long social stigma that girls should only grow up to be pretty little princesses, ballerinas and models", said game developer Gina Valentine. "We want to encourage girls with those dreams to venture out into the world of math and science just so they can get an idea of what it is like. I think our latest gaming challenge encourages girls to do just that."
Gina Valentine has come up with a structured gaming challenge that encourages girls between the ages of 8 to 14 to engage in a variety of math and science games. The games revolve around age appropriate activities, and encourage girls to use their math and science skills.
Girls will compete against each other in an online gaming world where they can compare scores and move up in levels. For every level a girl moves up she gets entered into a drawing to experience a day in the life of her dream career.
"Girls will get a chance if they win the grand prize to spend a day being a professional ballerina, princess or model", said Valentine. "What they don't realize is that they are honing their math and science skills, while also seeing that they can have fun and pursue their dream career while doing it."
The grand prize drawing will be held twice a year, and there will be several categories including overall high scorer in math and science categories, and age categories. The goal is to try to attract the games to the largest audience possible.
Valentine has decided to take her fun online game on tour. She will be presenting it at malls, in museums and in schools in an effort to generate interest in taking part in these fun girl games.
"I always wanted to be a ballerina", said Cindy Smirk. "Now I can possibly get a chance to see what it is like to be one, while having fun doing it. I hope I win!"
