Tribeca Dentists Warn Of the Dangers of Soy and Sports Drinks

Despite its great reputation, soy milk has recently come under fire for its harmful effects on tooth enamel. Sports and energy drinks also cause the same sort of harm.

New York, NY (prHWY.com) June 28, 2012 - Recent trends have many people altering their diets to remain healthy. Consumers are turning to certain foods to improve their health, purchasing products that are advertised as healthy. But cosmetic dentist Tribeca are concerned about recent findings that suggest that what may be healthy for certain aspects of your health can be very harmful to other aspects of your body--namely your teeth.

For instance, while studying the levels of acid and bacteria in certain types of milk, an Australian research team has discovered that soy milk is much more acidic that common cow milk. This is due to a bacteria in soy milk known as Streptococcus Mutans that is extremely harmful to the consumer's teeth when taken in large doses.

This harmful bacteria can cause tooth decay in that it eats away at carbohydrates and produces a harmful acid that corrodes the teeth. While this acid isn't quite as harmful as the acids found in sodas--which are also not good for your teeth--it is still an issue of concern with dentist in 10013 zip code because it is not news that has really gotten much attention yet. Whether from soda or soy milk, any sort of acid is extremely bad for your teeth. Acids of all types will erode away the tooth's enamel, leaving the structure of the tooth without the necessary protection. Weakened enamel then leads to sensitive teeth and if this condition goes untreated, it can only be repaired by cosmetic surgery.

When compared to cow's milk, soy milk is actually much worse for your oral health. In fact, the calcium in cow's milk actually fights off bacterias while producing an incredibly insignificant amount of acids from its sugar content. In other words, according to dentist Tribeca NY, you may want to do a little digging on that next healthy consumable good before you go all in and start buying.

Soy milk isn't the only culprit here. A similar study conducted by Southern Illinois University is uncovering the fact that supposedly healthy sports drinks are also harmful to teeth. While these drinks are indeed healthy in their own way, the acidity in them is just as bad--if not worse--than sodas. The fact that these drinks are popular among teens is a real issue of concern for many dentists. Just like the acidic content in the "healthy" soy milk, the content of some sports and energy drinks can wreak havoc on tooth enamel. And even worse, unlike soy milk's traditional cow back-up, there are no real alternatives for these sports and energy drinks for the consumer to choose from.

If you have any questions or concerns about certain aspects of your diet in regards to your teeth that may not be readily available on the packaging or ads, ask your local dentist. Cosmetic Dentist Tribeca would be happy to answer your questions.
