Bournemouth, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) June 13, 2012 - There's an irritatingly catchy song from a few years back called Heaven is a Halfpipe, penned by the band OPM, which features the lyrics "If I die before I wake, at least in Heaven I can skate. . ." And for an increasing number of people, skating is indeed their idea of Heaven. What's more, it's a great way to get fit.

Riding a longboard, skateboard or rollerblades can be great exercise. It's obviously a great activity for strengthening the legs, but is also a good calorie burner for overall weight loss, and helps you to tone your whole body. As if you needed an additional incentive, skates, skateboards, longboards and scooters are also very green forms of transport.

Longboards are similar to surfboards or snowboards, with the addition of wheels. While they are often lumped in with skateboards by the uninitiated, there are in fact quite a few differences.

You use longboards for downhill and slalom racing, cruising and curving. The stunts you perform on them are typically quite different to those performed on a skateboard.

Priory Sports offers a range of longboards to suit all pockets. For example, the Corsair Longboard is just £89. It promises a totally new shape, combing both convex and concave shaping with a wonderfully sharp kick tail. The six ply convex deck with flex smoothly under load and the concave enables you to lock in when carving hard. The Corsair Longboard comes with superbly grippy Mindless 68mm Outlaw wheels as standard, along with a new 5.5 RK truck. The finishing touch comes in the form of a smooth surf style graphic and a bottom ply of light bamboo, which adds strength and flex.

If longboarding is not for you, why not get yourself a pair of skates?

These days we are often hearing how children are not getting outside enough and not getting enough exercise, with childhood obesity becoming a real ticking time bomb. But children love exciting forms of exercise, and there are few sports as exciting as skating.

Skating is also good because you don't need lots of expensive equipment. All you need are some skates (obviously!) and some protective padding for the knees, elbows and head.

Priory Sports offer both traditional roller-boot style skates with four wheels and a stopper, such as the SFR Racing Storm for just £40 (available in pink and blue) and rollerblade style skates such as the SFR Vortex Skate, also available in blue or pink for £40.

Scooters are another popular choice, with children and also with some adults.

Priory Sports stock a range of scooters including the J Bug Pro Series Pro X-V1.0 Ithaca Verdi, for £109.

Whichever you prefer, it's worth giving skating or scooting a try - in fact, it's a wheely good idea!
