Cri-report Prediction on Hydropower Development in China

Hydropower is a renewable resource, which has little harmful influence on the environment. Moreover, the generating efficiency of hydropower is as high as over 90%.

Shanghai, China (prHWY.com) June 11, 2012 - (CRI-report) - China has an advantaged water resource, and the total volume ranks the first in the world. The installed capacity of developable hydropower is 378 million kilowatts. However, for the time being, the utilization degree of national hydropower development is still relatively low, and the development rate is only 18.5%. Moreover, there is the situation that the development of eastern and western regions is seriously uneven. The eastern regions of China is with the developed economy but the short water resources, while the western regions are with the developing economy but the rich water resources so that the development rate is very slow. In the early of the 21th century, the medium to large-sized conventional hydropower stations planned to be constructed are Hongjiadu (540 MW), Longtan (4200MW), Xiaowan (4200 MW), Sanbanxi (1000 MW) and so on. In 2010, marked by the commissioning of the No.4 unit of Xiaowan, installed capacity of China's hydropower surmounted to 200 million kilowatts. At present, China is not only the most powerful country of the installed hydropower, but also with the largest scale and quickest development speed in the world, which gradually becomes the world's hydropower innovation center. The fast growth of hydropower undertaking makes great contributions to the national economy and the development of the society as well as spurs the prosperity of equipment manufacturing industry of China power. It is predicted that by 2015, the national installed capacity of hydropower will reach 15000 MW and the unified power grid covering the nation will basically form.

The Chinese economy enters a new development period. With the rapid growth of national economy and the acceleration of China's modernization process, the development of hydropower is restricted by the resources and environment, the tense supply of energies and the increase of ecological environment pressure. Therefore, developing the water resources in the west and realizing the west-east power transmission play an important role in solving the short supply of energies, improving the ecological environment and promoting the coordination and sustainable development of regional economies. Furthermore, developing the hydropower undertaking is conducive to narrowing the gap between cities and rural areas, improving the production and living conditions of rural regions.
