Los Vegas, CA (prHWY.com) May 1, 2012 - Sad news for poker community across the globe! Amarillo Slim, the master of poker game and record holder of highest winnings in WSOP 1972 events, died on Sunday morning, April 29, 2012. "I have returned from Las Vegas and I am on my way back to play poker," said 83 years old, determined Amarillo in an interview, last July, but life didn't give him a chance and he took his last breath in Baptist St. Anthony Hospice, where he was admitted since April 18.

Thomas Preston Jr., a.k.a., Amarillo Slim, made waves in the poker world with his sparkling performance in WSOP 1972 events, when he won $60,000 in just 22 hours, spent on the tables. A tough opponent for famous poker players like, President Lyndon Johnson and Pablo Escobar (a drug aristocrat), Amarillo Slim claimed a spot in Poker Hall of Fame in 1992.

"I think my dad did for the poker world what Arnold Palmer did for golf," Bunky Preston, his son, said. A poker player by profession, but a cowboy by heart, Amarillo was a true horse lover. Till his last breath, he wanted to play poker and ride horses; he said his daughter Deane to bring the cowboy shoes as he may get a chance to ride.

Other than making records in poker tournaments and promoting poker, Amarillo also gained popularity with his stunts like, $300,000 worth winnings in dominoes and a camel ride through a casino in Morocco. His book "Amarillo Slim in a World of Fat People" reveals his records and amazing experiences in poker, horse riding, and other interests.

Amarillo enjoyed the limelight by appearing in "The Tonight Show" and "60 Minutes." Just like any other celebrity, Slim also had to face law when he was charged for illegal liquor transportation and offensive assault in three cases. He doled out 2-years trial and $4,000 fine, but he upheld his innocence.

Amarillo Slim is no more, but his iconic achievements will always be remembered in the poker coomunity, both live and online. No one can forget his passion for poker and his efforts to bring the poker game out of the dark, smoky rooms and make it a billion-dollar worldwide business. His book will help more players becoming Amarillo Slim and breaking his records.
