Laptops are built for mobility, and when it comes to speed there are only a few that can keep up with a desktop. Despite the lack of powerhouse components built into a laptop there are a few things we can do to optimize a laptop's performance.
1. Your laptop is only as fast as your hard drive. So deleting some temporary files will definitely help speed up your laptop. You can do so by clicking My Computer>Right Click on 'C:' drive>Under the 'General' Tab>Click 'Disk Cleanup'>Check all the available options and then press 'OK'. This should delete unnecessary files on your hard drive.
2. Defragging your hard drive is another good idea. If you're wondering what defragmenting your hard drive means, its basically taking the 'fragmented' files on your hard drive that are scattered all over and consolidating them. You can do so by clicking My Computer>Right Click on 'C:' drive>Under 'Tools' tab click 'Defragment now'>Click on 'Defragment Disk.'
3. Chances are you have manufacturer softwares that came with your laptop when you first bought it. A lot of these softwares are considered 'bloatwares', and they were placed on your laptop simply for promotional purposes. In most cases you can simply go to your computer's control panel, and select 'Programs' and choose to uninstall the softwares that you do not need. *NOTE* The bloatwares varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Please consult your user manual or manufacturer's website.
4. If you have a more recent machine, it could be running in 'power saving' mode. Power saving mode can cause your processor to run at a lower speed. You can change the power option by going to your Control Panel>Click on 'System and Security'>Click on 'Power Options'>select 'High Performance'.
5. Lastly, if you have a lot of programs running in the background that you're not using such as Skype, filesharing client, etc. Exit those programs to free up system memory. *NOTE* System memory is the NOT the same as Hard Drive space.
There are definitely more you can do to get the most out of your laptop, but the above five tips are just as important in optimizing your device as any others.
