Iowa City, IA (prHWY.com) March 6, 2012 - A share index of the 100 most highly capitalized UK companies listed by the London stock exchange is described in one word called 'Footsie'. This word has been pronounced by the FTSE.

The Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange are the two companies who jointly own this. They even maintain the index under the independent FTSE group. But, a definitive agreement has been signed by the London Stock Exchange recently where it has announced to acquire the 50 per cent stake in FTSE International Limited, from Pearson, which it didn't own earlier.

The FTSE International Limited will be now wholly owned by the London Stock Exchange Group by following the transaction that is expected to close in Q1 2012 which will be subject to customary closing conditions.

As a start in January, 1984, it had a base level or starting point of 1000 points which has now moved and increased to a level around 5500 as of November, 2011. The index reached at its peak to 6950 in December 1999 when the world observed a height of internet bubble.

The FTSE 100 is at the top in the league followed by the FTSE 250 and then FTSE 350 and at last - FTSE All: share that brings up the rear respectively. The companies eligible for FTSE 100 are all highly capitalized as FTSE 100 is like a badge of honor when it is attached to any company. FTSE 100 is considered to be a benchmark of performance for all the listed companies.

Certain number of requirements is set out by FTSE Group that needs to be fulfilled by the component companies. These requirements are:

>> To have a full listing on the London Stock Exchange with a Sterling or Euro denominated price on the Stock Exchange Electronic Trading Service

>> To meet certain tests on nationality, free float and liquidity.

In order to make more difference to the index for the larger companies as compared to smaller companies, in the FTSE, the share prices are weighted by market capitalization.

The companies that are listed can be promoted as well as demoted between the FTSE leagues. These companies who are in the league are reviewed quarterly and they need to follow certain conditions put forth by the FTSE. The process flows in a particular pattern wherein the company whose capitalization has fallen below a certain amount will be demoted and replaced with a lower league company whose capitalization has performed highly.

When you find that FTSE 100 is rising, it means that the value of the shares in the top 100 companies that have been listed in the London Stock Exchange is even increasing.
