Bel Marra Nutritionals supports antioxidants as being the one thing to help prevent vision loss with age
Bel Marra Nutritionals, well know for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, supports study of antioxidants as being the one thing that will help to prevent vision loss with age.

Vision is one of one of the most important senses and vision loss with age is a frightening prospect. "Vision loss is not inevitable!" says Harvard eye expert, Dr. D. Max Snodderly. "The traditional thinking is that as age increases, visual sensitivity decreases. But what is being said is, maybe that's not inevitable. Key nutrients could help to retard vision loss with age."
Cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration are common causes of vision loss in older adults in America. In fact, macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in elderly individuals. According to the AFB there are "a disproportionate number of elderly individuals who have vision loss. Perhaps even more alarmingly, the trend is expected to continue to grow significantly as the baby boom generation continues to age. Experts predict that by 2030, rates of vision loss will double along with the country's aging population."
An increase in free radical damage and oxidative stress are common factors that contribute to vision loss with age. It is no surprise that oxidative stress is linked to cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration just as free radical damage has been linked to a variety of different medical conditions.
How then is free radical damage and oxidative stress related to these diverse conditions?
The eye is exposed to elevated levels of UV light, which causes oxidation and the degradation of the photoreceptors in the eye. This can lead to macular degeneration. In glaucoma, free radical damage is associated with increased intraocular pressure and visual field damage, which are primary factors in causing the condition. Lastly, free radicals are a significant cause of cataracts. Oxidation, caused by free radicals generated by exposure to ultraviolet light, is a major cause of damage to the lens. The free radicals oxidize proteins, which cause them to no longer function correctly. These damaged proteins then causes cloudiness of the lens. These proteins accumulate leading to cataracts. UV exposure is not the only cause of free radicals in the eyes, obesity and age lead to higher levels of free radicals. Smoking, alcohol and pollutants also play a role.
But, free radical damage can be controlled. The one simple thing that can be done is to increase consumption of antioxidants.
Antioxidants are present in nature. They are compounds which inhibit oxidative damage. Amazingly, antioxidants prevent cell damage by sacrificing themselves. This means the body must replace the antioxidants to maintain protection against free radicals and oxidative stress. Increasing intake of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables as well as supplements rich in antioxidants are the best thing to fight vision loss with age.
