The HIV reservoirs group is striving to find a permanent cure of the disease by eradicating the latent viruses present in the human body. The challenge at the moment is suppression of the reservoirs when anti retroviral therapy is stopped. Some of the major challenges faced are the long lived and the latent CD4+ memory T cells that continue to remain hidden despite persistence of ART. Scientists like Alain Lafeuillade are working to identify the poorly defined and not too much appreciated infection of other cells. They could be marrow stem cells, tissue macrophages, astrocytes and microglia. There are instances of complex cell mechanisms which can influence HIV-1 latency and expression and they can vary by site, type, state of activation and location of organ as well.

The HIV reservoirs group is trying to move a way and focus on other areas. Even though blood is the major depository for the virus, there are important reservoirs as well like the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, lymph nodes, genital tract, brain, liver/spleen and various other anatomic sites.

There are presently more than 34 million people in world carrying the dreaded HIV virus. In spite of the proven potency of the ART, 7100 people are infected on a daily basis. And with ART, you cannot be assured of a complete cure. It has been found that a brief stoppage of ART can bring back the virus again. Stoppage in between is necessary to avoid toxicity, other side effects as well as resistance to the therapy. To find out the reason for the virus springing back once ART is stopped, a pioneer in HIV research, Alain Lafeuillade founded a working group consisting of researchers from all over the world. There are more than 200 researchers working in this area to find a functional cure of HIV.

According to the pioneering doctor, HIV reservoirs group is the single biggest challenge in the 21st century. Dr.Lafeuillade has launched a website, which is a first of its kind which unites scientists working for a HIV cure. The next symposium on HIV to be held in May this year is expected to draw more than 2000 participants form the world over who will be searching for a HIV cure.
