Previous research showed plant sterol has a similar chemical structure and cellular function to that of human cholesterol. As plant sterol has a lower bioavailability than dietary cholesterol it can therefore displace cholesterol from mixed micelles in the intestine, reducing the absorption of dietary cholesterol and can aid in cholesterol management.

From evidence provided in over 80 clinical studies supporting the effectiveness of plant sterol on cholesterol management, on average an 8.8% drop on LDL cholesterol (the harmful form) was noted clearly contributing to overall cholesterol management.
