Glasgow, AL (prHWY.com) February 21, 2012 - February 21, 2012 - Sand sculpting can be simply defined as a form of art whereby sculptures are made out of sand. It emerges that there are certain types of sand from which aesthetically appealing sculptures can be crafted. In this context, the word 'sand' is a reference to a type of soil whose grains (particles) are bigger than those that are associated with clay and silt. That is against a background where clay soil particles tend to be the finest, with sand particles being the coarsest on account of their superior size. In between the two is silt: whose particles are not as coarse as those associated with sand, nor as fine as those associated with clay. The sand particles in turn vary in terms of fineness/coarseness: with those that are relatively fine (but not fine enough to fall into the category of 'silt') being the ones typically used in sand crafts, of which sand sculpting is an example.

It later emerges that sand sculpting is practiced at two levels, namely:

1. The amateur level: this is where we find the people who make sand sculptures for the fun of it. In other words, these are people who engage in this particular form of sand craft without expectation of monetary gain. To these people, making sculptures out of sand is a hobby, rather than a professional undertaking.

Talking of amateurs, it is worth mentioning that they are not always mediocre artists. This is a clarification we have to make against a background where some people use the word 'amateur' and 'mediocre' interchangeably. Ultimately, all that being an 'amateur' in a particular field means is that the person in question does what he or she does for the love of it. In actual fact, when it come things like sand crafts, the 'amateurs' tend to be the best artists.

The fact that amateur sand sculptors don't undertake the art with the intention of making money doesn't mean that they give their sand sculptures away for free. Most of them make efforts aimed at getting buyers for the most impressive sand sculptures they come up with. But when all is said and done, sand sculpting is something they do 'just for the love of it.'

2. The 'professional' level: this is where we find the people who make sand sculptures as a business. Sand sculpting as a professional undertaking is common in beach towns. Some of these 'professional' sculptures make sand sculptures for sale, whereas others opt to make sand sculptures for hire. That is where they hire out the sand sculptures to people who, for instance, may be holding beach weddings.

A good number of professional sand sculptures turn out to be people who have general artistic backgrounds, and who practice many other arts, besides sand sculpting. Others turn out to be folks who only practice sand sculpting (to the exception of any other art forms).

Some of the professional sand sculptors operate within companies. Other sand sculptors operate individually. We also have some cases where sand sculptors operating individually opt to set up groups where they share ideas whilst maintaining their individual identities as artists.

Another group of sand sculptors operating at the professional level is that of those who serve as 'instructors' to aspiring sand artists. You come to realize that there are people who get deeply impressed by sand sculptures upon coming across them -- leading to a situation where they desire to learn sand craft, so that they can make similar artworks. This has led to demand for art sculpting training, which has in turn led to the emergence of another group of art sculptors who teach this and other sand crafts to aspiring sand sculptors.
