Carra: Gerrard Must be New England Captain

---------------, NV (prHWY.com) February 20, 2012 - Following Fabio Capello's decision to quit his role as England manager over the FA's decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy, media speculation has been rife surrounding who will succeed the Italian in the hot seat of English football - and who will take on the Three Lions' armband.

Although scouse affection towards the national team is and never has been overwhelming, Jamie Carragher has been forthright in his views over both positions. The legendary Anfield defender has clamoured for an Englishman to replace Capello and stated that Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, the bookies' favourite, is his ideal candidate.

As for the captain's armband, 'Carra' again stated there was only one man for the job - his own club captain.

"Steven Gerrard is the stand-out captain, and that's not a biased verdict. He's captained in Champions League finals, Europe, big Premier League games. He's also captained England in the last World Cup and he's one of England's best players. For me, I don't think there's a debate.

"It should be Steven Gerrard without a shadow of a doubt."

Carragher's unequivocal stance was also supported by England striker Wayne Rooney who tweeted:

"Gerrard is the perfect choice for me."

Liverpool's talisman Gerrard has captained the club for almost a decade having inherited the armband from Sami Hyypia in 2003 and has been touted as a frontrunner for the England role along with Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker.

Liverpool and a now fully-fit Gerrard will be looking to bounce back in their FA Cup home tie against Brighton this weekend, where a second domestic cup victory over the south coast side this season will see the Reds into the quarter-finals.
