Arkansas, AR (prHWY.com) January 18, 2012 - Tiles are an important addition to any house. Besides providing beauty and elegance to your home, they provide the much needed durability also. The best part is that they are very easy to install and uninstall; even you can do it yourself, if you dedicate a little time to learn the technique.
If you are planning to remove the old tiles and replace them with new ones, this article can help you to learn the technique of uninstalling the tiles, ceramic tiles to be more specific.

How much easy it would be to remove ceramic tile from floor would largely depend on the material that was used to fasten the ceramic tile at the time of installation.

Given below are steps to remove ceramic tile that have been attached to cement board.
Materials & Tools Required
 Flat headed hammer
 3-inch putty knife
 Flat garden shovel
 Power grinder that comes with a protruding wheel
 Iron pry bar
 Leather gloves
 A vacuum cleaner
 Facial mask
 Safety goggles
 Long-sleeved shirt

Step 1: Start from the Edge
Placing putty knife under the edge, tap the tile with the hammer to lift it off.
Step 2: Take away the Tile Grout
Using the putty knife, pry between the tiles so as to crush the grout. This would make it easier to take off the tile from the board backing. If grout happens to be too hard, you can use a power grinder and sand out the tile grout.
Step 3: Keep on Removing Single Tiles
Once the tile grout and few tiles have been removed, slide the knife under each ceramic tile; keep the handle very close to floor. Using the hammer, tap the putty knife's handle sharply. The tile can break into two pieces or it may come out in one piece. Keep on removing tiles until cement board, about 8" X 6" inches, is not exposed.
Step 4: Take out the Cement Board
Once all tiles have been removed off a section of cement board, break the board using a hammer so that floor joists become visible. Place the garden shovel under the cement board and using it as a lever, remove the board with attached tiles. Pause in between and vacuum the area to avoid inhaling tile dust and cement. You would need to move the garden shovel right or left side of the floor joist as you come across nails that were used to attach the cement board. If you can create a good gap between the floor joists and the cement board, it would become easier to remove a large area of one tile in one go.
Step 5: Take out all Nails from the Board
Using a pry bar or a claw hammer, which has a nail slot, pull nails out of the board. Now you may remove the fragments from the floor joists and dispose of them.
Step 6: In Case the Board was Screwed Down
In case the cement board was screwed, you will need to use a power drill to remove the screws from the cement board. Don't forget to vacuum your room thoroughly so as to remove any dust that would have accumulated there.
