Costa Mesa, CA (prHWY.com) January 15, 2012 - In many ancient cultures, piercings and tattoos were a very common practice. One would think that such practices would die out in the modern world, but tattoos and piercing are as popular as ever. As the popularity of these two increased, more and more people have begun to question the effects these tattoos and piercings have on the body.

The University of Pennsylvania states that tattoo originated from a Tahitian word, 'tattau' or 'to mark'. Applying a tattoo is an expensive operation where the electric tattoo machine is used to inject ink deep into the skin's dermis. Because the dermis is the skin's second layer and is not easily cast off like the epidermis, tattoos are considered to permanent.

Every single tattoo is unique and is designed that way for certain reasons. The Food and Drug Administration of the United States has cited several reasons as to why people get tattoos. These are rebellion, makeup, cover for hair loss, passage rites, or cover for uneven skin pigmentation.

On the other hand, the Nemours Foundation Kids Health describes body piercing as a method of using a needle to pierce or puncture the skin, after which, jewellery may then be inserted into the pierced portion. The body parts that are often pierced include the ear lobes, nose or nostrils, eyebrows, lips, tongue, nipples, and nave.

Now here is the big question: 'Are there certain risks involved in these procedures"?

Invasive procedures that involve wounding the skin will always have risks of infection. The fact that some equipment may not be properly sanitized significantly increases the risk infection. According to the FDA, infection is not the only risk. Tattooing procedures also make a person prone to HIV transmission, hepatitis a or c transmission due to unsterilized equipment, and allergies from ink; nodules may result from the healing of the tattoo, formation of keloids, MRI complications.

As for piercings, there are risks of HIV transmission, infection, scar formation on the pierced portion, and even edema.

Although tattoos are very nice to look at, it is important to take note of the risks involved. It is even riskier for people with heart ailments, diabetes, skin disorders, allergies, pregnancy, and disorders in the immune system. Before planning on getting a tattoo or a piercing, it is important for one to clearly understand the risks involved in the procedures.
