"Starving yourself to be healthy? That doesn't make sense." Mandy Seay, RD, LD uses her experience from working as nutrition consultant to provide information in her eBook, Your Best Health, to others who might not be able to see a dietitian. "Since I mainly see clients with diabetes and/or trying to lose weight, I have a good idea of what they are looking for, what they might not know - but should, what their struggles are and what information is sure to shock and pleasantly surprise them."
Mandy often uses a truck analogy to describe how our bodies work. If you compared your body to a truck, would you say that you once drove a light weight truck that has a little extra in tow? Or would you compare yourself to an 18-wheeler? Either way, she explains that you'll need more fuel to move that extra weight around. Being overly restrictive will only cause the body to breakdown precious, calorie burning muscle to fuel it and stall weight loss. Instead fuel the body properly, and sufficiently, to keep it running in its best condition.
She notes that carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of fuel, but can also affect blood sugar, so carbohydrate intake must be balanced but not overly restricted. Your Best Health shows users how to count carbohydrates in order to sufficiently fuel their bodies, lose weight, preserve muscle and manage blood sugar.
According to the Mayo Clinic, carbohydrate counting is not just for people with diabetes, "it is the best eating plan for almost anyone."
The US National Library of Medicine states, "People with diabetes can control their blood sugar better if they can count how many carbs they eat."
The American Diabetes Association says, "Carbohydrate counting, or "carb counting," is a meal planning technique for managing your blood glucose levels. Foods that contain carbohydrate raise blood glucose. By keeping track of how many carbohydrates you eat and setting a limit for your maximum amount to eat, you can help to keep your blood glucose levels in your target range."
Mandy cautions that Your Best Health is not a "low carb" diet or quick weight loss scheme by any means. Instead, it is a manual on how to eat like a normal person yet lose weight and control blood sugar. The plan is very flexible - there are no diet foods to purchase and no food is off limits. Certain foods are highlighted as "cheat" foods, free foods and/or replacement foods but any, and all, foods can be incorporated.
