----------, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) December 21, 2011 - The government is reportedly planning a sweeping shake-up of the education system and is calling for tougher lessons for primary school pupils.

Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, has declared that England should adopt a Far Eastern-style curriculum in which schoolchildren are taught separate lessons in grammar checking.

There are concerns that too many students reach the age of 16 without a basic grasp of spelling and punctuation. And interim findings of an independent review ordered by Gove show that primary school pupils should receive lessons in basic scientific concepts including how plastic is made and how machines work.

The proposal is part of an overall scheme to "stiffen up the National Curriculum" to create a gold standard such as is demonstrated by the rigorous exam systems in high-performing countries such as Hong Kong, China and Singapore.

The government-commissioned review of the UK curriculum, by Expert Panel, reveals that in England children do not learn about the operation of a simple machine until seven and nine years old. In contrast, in Singapore kids are introduced to such concepts from as young as six years old.

The report shows that the successful Asian education system makes sure that all pupils have mastered a subject before moving on to the next; whereas in the UK, many pupils are left trailing behind.

Alterations to a new curriculum have been delayed until 2014 so that the radical proposals can be debated - but until then, get expert online proofreading for your academic work by Proofreading.co.uk.
