New York City, NY (prHWY.com) November 27, 2011 - The knee bears a great amount of weight especially when standing or walking. The knees play a vital role even when doing things like bending and sitting. If the knees are not working properly, it can be very debilitating. As the condition worsens over time most people feel pain even when sitting or laying down. A Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon may suggest some sort of exercise to lessen the pain, yet if the problem has reached a critical stage, total knee replacement may be only way to provide a complete cure.

Total knee replacement is a major operation that aims at replacement of the damaged knee joint cartilage, which is responsible for the severe pain. The lower end of the femur and upper end of the tibia are shaped to allow the insertion of the specially built up metal components into the gap. The metal tray that is fitted to the upper end of tibia is joined with a plastic bearing.

The plastic material inserted as the replacement of the original knee joint can be of fixed type or moving type. The fixed type bearing is the most common and works for a longer time span. The moving or rotating total knee replacement technique is used in younger people or those who have a heavier build. Surgeons have devised an improved technique of medical pivot implant that uses a superior technology plus the implant can perform all the functions of a knee and even feels like the patient's own knee.

The main objective of the knee replacement is to restore the normal flexibilities of the knees. It is a major operation and the recovery time can be relatively long. Success of total knee replacement depends on several factors including age of the patient, general health condition, and rehabilitation. The rehabilitation programs may be short if the patient is in the good physical shape. Many patients experience pain after surgery, which often subsides with rehabilitation.

When recovering from an knee pain or total knee replacement surgery, try to get out there as soon as you feel healthy. Minimize your down time, so it is best to get back out there as soon as you can, yet reduce the intensity of your workout. Test yourself and stop if you feel any pain.

If you are a runner, log the mileage on your running shoes. Shoes get worn out and when they do they can cause pain and injuries if they are still used - this is a good preventative measure when you get back to your normal activities.. A good rule is to replace your running shoes every five hundred miles, even if they feel like they still have some miles in them.
