New York City, NY (prHWY.com) November 26, 2011 - Knee pain can be quite debilitating because the knee it is one of the most used and complex joints of the human body. The knee's stability comes from four ligaments, muscles that support the knee and the actual knee joint. The knees also support the body's weight throughout life. Knee pain can appear at any time and has a range of sources. Some pain can be alleviated, while other types of pain are the result of a problem that must be treated to not only ease the pain, but also cure the underlying problem.

The symptoms of knee pain can vary, especially in athletes, yet there are usually four general variations. The first stage of pain occurs only after sporting activities like running, jumping, weight-bearing exercises, etc., yet the pain is not enough to affect the knee's performance. The second stage includes pain during and after sporting activities and may have some effect on the knee's performance in terms of functionality. The third stage of knee pain causes pain during and after sporting activities, with the pain getting worse during the activity, to the point where it degrades performance of the knee as well as athletic performance. The final stage of knee pain symptoms occurs when tendons tear - this type of injury requires surgical treatment.

Knee pain often begins at the tendon, also referred to as the anterior ligament that connects the knee cap, or patella, to the bones and muscles that surround the knee. The injury can progress to degeneration of the tendon - strong, connective tissues - or tearing of the tendon.

Causes of sports-related knee pain are a result of overuse and repetitive overloading of several aspects of the knee. Tears that cannot heal due to overuse or overexertion tend to worsen over time unless the athlete stops or modifies the activity causing the problem. Sports often related to knee pain include diving, skateboarding, snowboarding, badminton, rope skipping, kickboxing, basketball, rugby, soccer or football, American football, track and field, golf, and bowling.

Early stage treatment includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Treatment in early stages may include exercises, stretches, and a modification of activities. Later stage knee pain treatment may require a visit to a sports clinic to help solve the knee pain.
