Most of us try and get around eight hours sleep a night, but without the correct mattress this is likely to be disturbed sleep. And yet beds are usually brought in a couple of minutes or worst still this task is put off. It's worth remembering that beds, mattresses, quilts and pillows do not last forever.

It has been advised by the Sleep Council that a fairly standard bed will last around eight years - however there are many factors that will affect this lifespan.

Obviously the quality of the bed when purchased will have a large impact on how long it will last, as well as how often the bed is used and if it's occasionally used as a trampoline for children.

A sure sign that you need a new bed are aches that you wake with but wear off during the day, or if you sleep better in other beds.

When the decision is made to buy a new bed, the process should start with a plan. There are hundreds of styles and types of beds to choose from, the first thing to decide is the size you need - length as well as width.

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, go bed shopping and test them out together. It is advised that when sharing a bed to opt for a minimum of a king size bed, which is 5ft wide.

Think about the cost, remember that for every £100 invested in the new bed that's only 3.5p per night if your bed lasts eight years.

Always check the size of the bedroom and access for the bed before you buy to avoid any problems on delivery.

And finally, don't go bed shopping when you are tired - everything will feel comfortable and you could make a very expensive mistake.
