Rajiv Abrol Stresses the Importance of Accounting Internships
As companies attempt to tighten budgets and reign in costs, many are choosing to scrap their accounting internship programs.

In a traditional accounting internship, the intern is still in school and working on an accounting degree. The student may not be qualified to work on high-level accounting tasks such as budget projections or tax planning, but the student can help a senior accountant pull together documentation and input and sort data. "This may sound like a small amount of work, but it's a big help when you're a stressed accountant," Rajiv Abrol says. "Having someone help you pull end-of-year reports together just helps the whole process go faster. Sharing the work helps reduce the stress."
Accounting internships may also help the students land jobs. "In an internship, a student gains valuable on-the-job experience. They know how the job functions and they know how a standard office operates," Rajiv Abrol says. "I always wrote my interns letters of recommendation at the end of the internship, so they could show prospective employers what they had done at work." This sort of documentation can help students prove their worth to skeptical employers, and could help them move to the front of the line in a competitive job market. "When I was responsible for hiring accounting staff, I always looked for people who had worked in an internship," Rajiv Abrol says. "These employees came to work with real skills I could put to use immediately. I hope more companies will consider hosting even one or two accounting interns. It really helps the company, the student and the company that student works for down the line. "
